With the many advances in anesthesia, dental tools, and behavior management techniques and medications, the days of scary, painful visits are a thing of the past. We have the training to coach your child through and ask that you let us do the explaining of procedures. Here, we are providing you with the basics of common dental procedures.
Cavities which are not as deep are treated with fillings. The tooth is cleaned out and all the decay is removed. A tooth-colored filling material is then placed and adapted to look like the natural tooth. A blue light is then shown on the material to make it hard. Immediately after the procedure normal function such as eating can resume provided no local anesthetic is used.
Crowns, or caps, are tooth-shaped stainless steel restorations that are placed over both adult and baby teeth with large cavities. All the decay is removed, the tooth is trimmed to fit the crown, then it is cemented on. The crowns placed on the back teeth are fully metal and those on the front teeth have an esthetic white facing. When it’s time for the new tooth to come in, both the crown and the underlying baby tooth fall off at the same time.
The innermost layer of the tooth is the nerve tissue, called pulp. Large cavities quite often involve this layer. To salvage the baby tooth a procedure known as ‘pulpotomy’ or a baby root canal is done. Here the nerve chamber is accessed and the infected tissue is removed and a healing medicament is placed. An adult tooth with an infected nerve may need a root canal, in which the complete nerve is removed and replaced with a filling material. After these procedures most often the teeth will require a crown to be placed.
In the event of tooth fracture, malformed teeth, or tooth discoloration we are able to repair teeth by using tooth-colored composite material.
Premature loss of the baby tooth can lead to shifting of the teeth on either side of the space. This loss of space can then hinder the new teeth from normally erupting causing misalignment. To prevent this from happening an appliance known as space maintainer is placed which saves the space. The need for future braces might still be there; however, the worsening of teeth alignment is prevented.
